Hansel and Gretel Foundation, Inc (HGFI)
The Hansel and Gretel Foundation, Inc (HGFI) is a non-profit organization. Its goal is to ensure and provide quality basic education for poor children in Camarines Sur. The foundation is managed by three Filipino volunteers. It was founded by Ms. Carmen Rossel – Dapilos, a native of the Philippines and an elementary teacher. Most of her students come from poor families. This inspired her to create a foundation geared towards providing access to quality basic education for poor but deserving students. To this, Ms. Rosell-Dapilos Constantly strives to contribute and seek necessary funds for her advocacy.
The first “Hansel and Gretel School” was constructed in 1991. After which, six schools were additionally constructed. Two of them were built in Aeta communities located at Buhi and Tigaon, Camarines Sur. Its program focuses on reading, writing, arithmetic and tree planting. There are 30 students in each class for 3 hours a day. The beneficiaries of the foundation are children belonging to poor families whose parents have no regular income as well as children from slum areas of the city.
The Hansel and Gretel Foundation is expanding its educational program to poor families found at coastal villages and fishing communities. Consequently, the Foundation is appealing for financial support to cover the teachers’ salary for the seven schools.
